Some thoughts on JMW Turner

I did write some thoughts on Turner ages ago, when I had just seen the movie and the exhibition, but it seems not to have published! Let’s try again.

First the movie, Mr. Turner.

Some of the cinematography was stunning, as was the central performance from Timothy Spall, but I was disappointed by the lack of content and how 2 dimensional the supporting cast were. I understand the unique way in which Mike Liegh works and I have always been a fan of his work, however it doesn’t work for a historical figure of Turners stature. His is a great story of working-class oik taking on the establishment and to my mind becoming the greatest British artist who has ever lived, not some lascivious, mumbling, grumpy old get!

Next, Late Turner at Tate Britain

Wow, what a show. I am so thrilled to have been able to view this amazing collection of canvases, watercolours and sketchbooks by the master – all produced after he hit 60 – a great age all those years ago. There may be hope for me yet!
